Adrenaline Scuba diving at the Komodo islands – a first hand report

Of shrinking planes, tiny airports and fantastic folk

One makes the mistake, living in India that Indonesia is just another Asian tiger next door; like Thailand or Malaysia. Perhaps that’s true... if you are flying to Jakarta. But divers go to Bali. And the more adventurous ones go to Komodo. That gets you within spitting distance of Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Indonesia is a surprisingly ‘poor’ country. But only in monetary terms. The people are surreally enchanting and gentle. Soft spoken and laughing. You hardly ever get to hear a voice raised in anger here. People don’t honk when standing in traffic queues. What a change.
Absolute “Komodo Cowboys”
We landed at Komodo airport from Ngurah Rai airport, Bali in the scorching heat of the late morning sun. I love that the definition of an airport can be expanded from a multi terminal sophisticated behemoth to a tin shed with a single tarmac. Komodo is closer to the latter in description. The tiny planes which ferry us there allow only 10 kg check in baggage; so if you are a fully equipped diver, be prepared to shell out the Rufias. One gets used to being jostled at the single baggage carousel by islanders and surfers (it’s a top surfing destination). And then one will get into a minivan to travel across the hump of a verdant volcanic hill to reach Sumbawa, west Komodo, passing sleepy villages and paddy fields. You turn a corner and a serpentine road leads to that little Eden called Kalimaya.

Bamboo luxury. An invasive rooster. The ocean at last.
What makes the Kalimaya Beach resort unique is its complete isolation; it is practically the only dive resort in that area of Komodo. It has an incredible house reef, the exploration of which (if you are a macro person) can easily encompass an entire dive vacation, such is the plethora of life around the various bommies (submerged offshore reefs). I recall Alex, Kunal and I spending at least two dive hours around just five such bommies, looking for an elusive leafy scorpion fish! But more about underwater vistas later. The on stilt air conditioned huts are fabulous and their en suite, open-to-sky bathrooms are insane. Equally insane is a voyeuristic black rooster who would land in the open loo and ogle the family jewels with undisguised interest. What is it with roosters and divers? (Anyone who hasn’t heard of the Bastard of Bangaram is missing a legendary story).
Lush & healthy reefs abound at Komodo’s pristine dive sites
We sat every night in the open dining room, with one side sliding into an infinity pool which in turn fades into the bay. At Kalimaya, they talk of pods of whales crossing the bay in the clear moonlight, moaning and blowing not more than 500 meters away. Perhaps you can start to fathom now what I am desperately trying to describe. But then, language and words are limited compared to the magnificence nature can unfold.

Diving with Dragons
Wallacea. That magical zone of incredible biodiversity which includes Sumbawa and Komodo. Towards Sundaland, west of the Wallace line, fauna akin to East Asia. Towards Australia, east of the line, everything changing to Oceanic species. Imagine a wonder water world where you get to see both; yet with an invisible boundary line drawn so that species on each side of the line turn back at it into their respective zones! Essentially, a deep water channel which formed when the continental shelves separated, this line separates fauna into Asian or Oceanic dominance. Komodo lies smack dab in the mind boggling Coral triangle, also known as the Amazon of the oceans. Covering just 1.6% of the planet’s oceanic area, it has 76% of all known coral species in the world. As a habitat for 52% of Indo-Pacific reef fishes and 37% of the world's reef fishes, it encompasses the highest diversity of coral fauna in the world. So if you want to see life in the ocean, there is no place in the world as pristine as Komodo. There are a few caveats, however.
Macro delights: Nudi Branchs make Komodo an underwater photog’s paradise
The waters here are really not for novice divers. You have to have decent skills, especially good buoyancy control, experience in drift diving and a calm head in case of a crisis. For sure, the dragons here are not all quadruped. The waters can be rather capricious and unforgiving. Komodo is a place which typifies anything impossibly beautiful but dangerous. Diver casualties can and do happen. But safe diving practices, following the instructions of locally experienced dive leaders, and knowing your own limitations can make this a heady combination of adrenaline and serenity, nature at its savage and enchanting best, and safe enough. Not a rookie diver destination for sure, but my humble experience would suggest a minimum requirement of an Advanced Open Water Certification with 50 dives, some of which include strong current confrontations. Let me illustrate with a scenario. This is not to intimidate anyone, but my brief does not mandate pulling punches. Before the reader jumps to any conclusions, let me state that these dives I rank as some of the best in my limited diving career.

Primordial S**t aka “Dude, where are my shorts?”
After sussing how everyone was diving, a few of us were considered fit enough to attempt the “Canyon” aka “Dude, where are my shorts?”, one of the most challenging dive sites in Komodo. Considering the difficulty level, we were honoured with the legendary Stuart, Aussie (of South African origins) manager and senior most dive leader of Kalimaya deigning to lead the dive.

We stopped in the middle of the open choppy blue, and Stu simply said, “This is it.” I looked around for the dive site, but it was my close friend and awesome dive buddy Kunal Khaladkar aka KK who saw it first. Then he uttered those immortal words, “this is some primordial s**t, dude.” I turned and followed his line of sight and my blood ran cold.

In the middle of nowhere, with waves crashing over them, stood two jagged, rocky outcroppings. Like watery sentinels to Hade’s world. The gap between these two rocks was what we had to target. The truth was that it was all just one rocky sea mount, with a deep and narrow channel in the middle.

The Canyon.
Dive brief was simple. Negative entry to 25 meters. Grab one of the two large boulders guarding the entrance. Sink fast or the rip current will drag you into the blue. Time your entry into the canyon. One at a time. The brief I now abandon to describe the dive itself. We descended as planned; KK, Alex and I, the tail team. We spotted trouble straight away. An advanced diver, who hadn’t dived in a while, was panicking and Francois, one of the French dive leaders was trying to calm him down at the entrance. But this meant we had minimal access to the boulders. I could feel the tug of the fierce current. Fortunately, Francois got the diver sorted out and we followed the two into the canyon; KK, I and Alex, in that order. No scope for buddy business here. We entered straight into massive magic. And magical hell.

Deep, dark blue. Walls (studded with sea urchins and scorpion fish) within painful scraping distance on both sides. Look up and you realise that you are practically in an overhead environment; the walls come closer and closer till they are almost meeting at the top, leaving just a sliver of light to slide through. The visibility gets murkier and I realise there is no heading up top if you get into trouble. No evidence of the end of the canyon so one has to be calm and breathe slowly and evenly, conserving air, with neutral buoyancy and trim being non-negotiable. And then there was the surge.

The canyon essentially acted as a funnel for the ocean on both sides of the sea mount. Thus the most vicious, Columbus like (remember the nausea inducing pendulum like amusement ride?) surge I have ever experienced. Incredible! Five meters forward, seven meters back. Sometimes you feel you are going nowhere. And you start wondering about your air supply. And all the time, the walls are getting narrower and narrower (until a diver with a pro camera rig had to twist sideways to scrape though).

“Doc” Bhaduri and his buddies “hooked” onto the reef
So here we were. Swimming in line. Swinging on our personal gigantic pendulum. Locked into our own personal space. Breathing our personal air in a stentorian manner. With as much modicum of control as our mind zen, technical ability & our experience would allow. As for me; how can one explain being s**t scared, supremely exalted and grimly determined at the same time?

Finally, end of the passage of intimidation. Come up to a huge boulder and ascend steeply to five meters, fighting the surge, madly deflating and trying not to get slammed at the same time. Enter a quasi-lagoon. Ascend too fast, and you are likely to be smashed to a pulp against the rocks. Don’t hit the bottom; it’s cluttered with scorpion fish and urchins. Perfect buoyancy is the key.

The canyon hadn’t finished with us. As I looked into the open ocean, I saw Stuart and his buddy literally getting swept away as they left the lagoon. There is a perennially strong current at the mouth of this mini lagoon. And here we come to the legend behind the name, “dude, where are my shorts?”. Seems there is an Italian divemaster called Nico who was one of the pioneers of this site. As he ascended out of the canyon for the first time, the current caught him. The ocean liked his loose Bermudas, and claimed it for its own. It took Nico sometime to realise he was starkers and then he asked his now famous question.

An experience unforgotten. A dive of a life time. I did not even mention the black tips resting on the bottom of the canyon. I won’t describe the de facto standards of 25-30 meter visibility, the frog fish, the sea snakes and other fantastic flora and fauna which are in abundance here; suffice it to say that they are unmatched.

The Dragons Emerge
Life stopped evolving here a million years ago. Or so it seems. And a throwback to prehistory stalks the barren wastes of the island of Komodo; relentless, merciless & exceedingly cunning. The Komodo Dragon.
The Komodo Dragon
It is true that the dragons have not evolved; perhaps they have had no reason to do so. The size of a squat horse, body armour just inferior to that of a rhinoceros. Weapons – pretty much the entire body. Razors sharp rows of powerful, long teeth; a venomous bite because of the innumerable pathogens it harbours in its maw, and a death grip which its jaws will not relinquish, unless it tears flesh and bones off or is killed itself. A tail which it wields like a weapon; beating and whipping its prey with stunning, even lethal blows. And claws. Grip and slash daggers in all its appendages. A fearsome killing machine indeed. Lazy during the day, but when on the hunt, especially at night, can move as fast as an equine. We were allowed to see the dragons only from off shore. On the island, only rangers are allowed to stay.

There are so many anecdotes I could narrate. Amazing food, tranquil evenings, great company, a jetty under the stars and over the reef. But one needs to discover this paradise on one’s own.

Lest I forget, difficult destinations are made smooth and superb when you have a fantastic team to handhold you and keep you comfortable. Seemant and Siddharth and Scuba India are so professional that you never get to know the efficient engine which is working behind the scene. And all this with a smile…mostly.

5 things you want to keep in mind when you go Scuba Diving

 Absolutely Fit to Dive
While scuba diving is a recreational and non-competitive sport, it can only be truly enjoyed by understanding basic “fitness for diving” principles. The Ocean is dynamic and divers can be challenged occasionally by the sea or diving conditions.

5 Ways To Get Yourself Dive Ready
Here are 5 things that you can work on to dive safely and make your diving more enjoyable:
1. HEART & LUNGS: Cardio-vascular fitness is important to maintain stamina, reduce physical stress and help in better breathing when needed while diving in challenging conditions. Swimming, running or even climbing up and down staircases are simple ways to build this kind of endurance

2. CORE MUSCLES: Carrying scuba diving gear on or off boats, swimming in a stable and streamlined posture and maintaining “trim” are all challenges that a strong back and abdominal muscles help with. Crunches, Planks & Yoga are the best here.

3. HIP & THIGHS: Have no doubt; strong hip and thigh muscles will save the day, every day! Shore Diving, getting on & off boats or boat ladders, finning effectively through a mild current – all of these will be a whole lot easier to deal with when the thigh muscles have been paid attention to. Squats and swimming from the hip and thigh are some easy ways to get strong thighs.

4. CALVES: Go diving in the “Maldives” and sample their famous “Channel Dives” which are all about handling some seriously strong current. A good diver will always use the calves as much as the thighs (knees and ankles being weak areas to Fin from). Many divers can suffer cramps in calves due to improper finning techniques, dehydration (a Big No-No while diving) or even mineral imbalances. Staying well hydrated & replacing essential salts is critical to happy diving.

5. THE MIND: A healthy body and mind go a long way in diving safely. Keep your worries away before Diving and don’t dive when you don’t feel like it, simple. This is a recreational sport, not the Navy Seals! Undue stress, mental or bodily fatigue is all avoidable when diving. Stay sharp, connected and aware so you not only react better to not OK situations but also truly enjoy Diving for what it gives best – peace of mind and happy memories.

Get your passport to the underwater universe – become a SCUBA diving professional

Becoming a SCUBA PRO
Day-dreaming of fish in a mundane office routine and need to break away? Already a certified diver and want to take your diving to the next level?

Take the plunge & GoPro!
The path to becoming a professional SCUBA diver is studded with friends (both on land & under the ocean’s surface), wisdom and a growing connection with nature.

SCUBA begins in the safety of a pool
As beginners, we all start off with the same first step, the PADI Open Water Diver course. Eager with anticipation, we sink into a world alien to most of us. Luckily, PADI courses are easy to pick up as they layer information and practice in order to make learning effective and fun. Over 04 days, students are taken through three modules which impart Knowledge, build skills in the shallows and finally dive in open water as deep as 18 meters or 60 feet! This begins the journey as an explorer of places unknown to the land-bound masses, places reached only with SCUBA (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus).

Now with an internationally valid license to SCUBA dive for life, it is time to explore paradisiacal destinations and immerse ourselves into thriving marine ecosystems that make up the oceans and the seven seas. As we desire to delve deeper into the blue, PADI Advanced training programs become the next step in the ladder to being a dive professional.
PADI course flow chart
With greater depth, comes greater responsibilities and so, the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course builds comfort, confidence and introduces us to diving in new environments. This course takes us deeper to 30 meters or 100 feet & teaches us navigational techniques among a myriad of other adventure diving options. Some choose to search for treasures in sunken wrecks while some choose to drift along with the currents and watch the ocean pass by as if in a film. It’s up to you to pick and choose between the options. Earning your Advanced PADI certification opens up the proverbial door to some mind-boggling experiences like wreck, night and cave diving among others. Many choose to now follow their interests “in-depth” by signing up for PADI Speciality courses.

Rescue skills in practice
A few move on the next rung in the ladder, being trained as an Emergency First Responder and a Rescue Diver. Willing and wanting to be more able and ready for life in the sea, divers groom their abilities and ready themselves for emergency situations. Besides learning methods of rescue and resuscitation, divers are trained to be able to assess and anticipate situations prior to them becoming an emergency. Serious as the syllabus is, the PADI Rescue Diver course is perhaps one of the most fun courses I’ve ever taken. Compared to shining a diamond in the rough, this course ups the ante on what it means to be a responsible and aware diver and adds comfort & readiness to respond to any situation.

Is “Going Pro” the right choice for me? Here lies the crossroads. One path takes you to the pinnacle of a non-professional recreational diver by earning your Master SCUBA Diver license. The other begins your professional SCUBA life as a PADI DiveMaster.

Become a SCUBAPro
To summit as a non-professional recreational diver, the PADI Master SCUBA diver license requires getting to PADI Rescue Diver and completing at least 5 different types of PADI Specialities with at least 50 dives logged. Armed with knowledge, experience and an unquenched thirst for exploration, PADI Master SCUBA divers earn their right to dive & explore even some of the toughest destinations where conditions are tough but the rewards multiply.

If you are as mesmerized by the Seas as I was, “Going Pro” is the only option. The PADI Divemaster course initiates you into life as an Ambassador of the Ocean. Though the course is meticulous and takes a minimum of 3 weeks, each task completed leaves you brimming with joy, awe and sometimes even fatigue! Taken under the wing of PADI Instructors, aspiring students are guided through what it means to be a Professional, both physically and mentally. With the added responsibility of other divers’ lives in their hands, new initiates are carefully observed, corrected and even chastised to ensure they are up to PADIs international standards of safety & education. For those who make it, their PADI Professional license is like a new lease on a life full of Sun, Sand & the Sea!

Graduation time!
Being a PADI DiveMaster also allows one to be an Assistant Instructor; someone who can literally run an entire dive centre, assist the Instructor in training courses, take certified divers out for planned fun dives, maintain gear, train and supervise juniors in the Team. The last step in becoming a full-fledged Dive Pro is to eventually certify as a PADI Open Water SCUBA Instructor (OWSI). This is a hard-earned rating after substantial experience in being an Assistant Instructor and passing a month-long Instructor Development Course (IDC). Instructors take their love for SCUBA and pass it on safely to others who can discover the beauty of what lies under the surface of our Blue Planet.

Take the Go Pro Challenge! Live fast, Dive young!

How to get SCUBA certified between your local inland dive centre and an open water destination

I'll be honest, at 37 I was pretty set in my routine of home, parenting and professional life. It was all going on comfortably till I found myself lacking in confidence even in day-to-day activities. And yet, nothing motivated me to break out of my misery. I didn't want anything to disrupt my daily grind, which was pulling me further into a depressing vortex. I realized it was time to shatter the glass bubble, one way or another.

Around this time, my husband had found joy in SCUBA diving. His accounts of training and diving with Absolute Scuba were filled with fascinating anecdotes of underwater and surface experiences. I was happy for him but secretly envied his newly-acquired skills. Probably sensing my state of mind, he encouraged me to try it too, but my challenge was more basic – I didn't know to swim.

Starting my swimming training was like going back to being a kid and learning to stop being scared of water. Keeping aside all embarrassment, I decided to train along with my six-year-old son. His coach taught me too! Within a few months, I felt a change in my attitude as I acquired a vital life skill. Next challenge was to try a dive for real.

The opportunity presented itself on holiday in Andaman Islands with a PADI Discover SCUBA dive. The experience left me wanting more, and a certification lured me. It was not hard to decide my next step, but the follow-through was a challenge. From understanding the science behind diving to preparing myself mentally, I had now started dreaming in shades of blue.

It was a big relief that the training was in a city pool, an environment I was familiar with. Seemant, my instructor, knew I was nervous and tried to stay calm while handling my worries! For the first time in my life, I was involved in an activity that genuinely challenged both my brain and body, requiring me to be focused and free at the same time. The best feeling in the world was almost within my reach. How do I describe the feeling of being submerged (even if it was a pool) with an overcast sky and the raindrops dancing on the surface? Watching the ripples from underneath was almost poetic! The successful pool training was my gateway to the sea.

I grabbed my opportunity hungrily. Mind you, I was still a bundle of nerves because the certification required that I demonstrate my pool skills in the open sea. After 15 years, I was travelling on my own. That in itself was a big step for me. On the overnight bus journey to Murudeshwar, my son called up from home and said, Mom, you can do this. Absolute Scuba's friendly atmosphere eased my worries and helped me concentrate on the task at hand.

After four dives, of which not all were easy, I finally got certified. The feeling indeed sank in when I got the PADI card in a month. SCUBA had set me free, gave me the confidence to try new things and be open to new experiences. The big blue always allured me. Now, I was ready to respond to its calling and truly immerse myself into a whole new world! The ocean has opened its arms to me, I have the key to the secret underwater world, and it whispers its joys and pains to me now. I reciprocate the love by continuing to dive and thanking the sea for changing my life forever!

Diving the Southern Red Sea with Absolute SCUBA

While most people say it’s great to be back home, we’re back from the thriving waters of Egypt with mixed emotions! After many trips of superb diving & delicious buffets, we know Egypt never disappoints! Our recent trip to the Red Sea in South Egypt strengthened our drive to Dive Egypt Till We Drop with its beautiful people & abundant reefs as we soaked in the Egyptian sun.
After meticulous planning & thorough research, we find ourselves on-board an uber luxurious vessel on an adventure to the Southern parts of the Egyptian Red Sea. The Red Sea attracts many a diver with its protected marine ecosystem, abundance of species & clear blue waters. The Southern waters are calmer so diving is more relaxed and perfect for divers looking for bliss & tranquillity underwater with easier diving conditions. Departing from Port Ghalib, we made our way through legendary dive areas like St. John’s Reef, Fury Shoals & the world famous Elphinstone Reef.

Our ultra-spacious vessel boasted 12 premium AC & en-suite cabins fully equipped with a TV (which no one switched on) and mini bar too (which was more frequently visited)! To top this off, the staff on board was very experienced, warm, hospitable & eventually became friends. At the risk of sounding a bit like a hog, just the buffets were worth making the trip for.
Each of the 21 dives we did brought on a surreal experience and showed us exactly why the Red Sea is held in such high esteem. Beneath the surface, life on the vibrant and colourful coral reefs thrived as if untouched by human exposure. Fury Shoals brought on an added surprise of dolphins underwater which didn’t seem to be bothered with us divers. Witnessing such conscious creatures in their homes was a treat to the eyes and will remain in fond memory. Macro life came alive as critters scuttled across the reefs making our Night dives full of action! But with all that these waters had to offer, the intricate cave systems of St. John’s reefs stood out for the feeling of solitude it left us with. The towering pinnacles covered with live coral & almost ethereal like swim-throughs left us with a sense of awe and respect for nature.

It’s hard to put into words an experience that is so surreal. So, to take you through our journey we’ve put together a little video of our journey to the thriving reefs of Egypt’s southern waters & its glorious cave systems.

Please share this video with friends, family, enemies and even strangers. Make sure to get the best experience by viewing in Full HD at 1080p (60FPS) with max brightness & headphones on!
Now back on solid land enriched with our shared experiences, our group of 25 people grew connected by mutual respect for our oceans and love for diving. Now the only question that remains is “Where next?” And so, we’ll spend our time scouring through the best dive destinations in the world to craft dive trips the “Absolute SCUBA” way. If you’d like to stay tuned to our upcoming destinations or want to begin your life of adventure, visit us and we’d be happy to share.

We hope to see you suspended somewhere in the Blue someday.
Shaun Patel, PADI OWSI

After starting his diving back in 2011, Shaun went professional in 2013. He’s logged in over 1100 dives since then.

Cheapest weekend Scuba getaways | A trip to Netrani Island

Explore Netrani Island the Absolute way!
Beach Aerial View Murudeshwar
Finished part of your PADI Open Water Diver course but confused where to finish? Never dived before but want to take the plunge? Stressed with the week and need some relief?

Allow me to take you on a journey to “The treasure in our backyards”: Netrani Island.
Eager and excited, we depart on Friday evening and find ourselves at the gates of a small town in Northern Karnataka called Murudeshwar in time to watch the sun rise over the green hills.

Our dive sites lay around 19 kilometers off the coast where the water clears up and we find ourselves at an isolated and uninhabited Island. Lucky voyagers often spot dolphins en-route. Here, we descend on a lively reef with arguably the clearest water closest to Mainland India’s coastline. Suitable for PADI courses and fun divers, diving Netrani Island is simply a pleasure.

A turtle peeps above the surface to take a breath
Apart from having a healthy population of reef fish, turtles and eels, locals occasionally spot whale sharks & humpback whales on their migratory routes. Our surface intervals are filled with fresh cut fruits, refreshments and excited chatter about our sightings. After our dives, the captain heads back and we see Shivas statue steadily growing in the distant horizon.

Back on shore and refreshed with a sense of peacefulness, anticipation grows for Day Two. The following day calls for another immersive experience which remains in fond memory for weeks to come. Our journey back begins Sunday evening and some wish that the bus was just a boat taking us to our next dive site.

What can I say about Monday that you don’t already know? Well, let’s look on the bright side. The weekend is not so far away :) If you have ever been to Netrani Island, I’d love to hear your story in the comments section below.

Adrenaline Scuba diving at the Komodo islands – a first hand report

A kaleidoscope called Komodo Of shrinking planes, tiny airports and fantastic folk One makes the mistake, living in India that I...
